How to Switch From Cigarettes to Vaping — A South African Guide

8 min read

A practical, step-by-step guide to switching from cigarettes to vaping in South Africa. What to buy, what to expect, how much you'll save.

Before you start

Vaping is not risk-free. It is intended as a less harmful alternative for existing adult smokers. If you don't already smoke, do not start vaping. Talk to your GP if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Step 1: Pick the right device

Ignore anything that looks like a sub-ohm cloud-chasing setup — those are for experienced vapers, not for people trying to quit cigarettes. You want a compact pod device (Vaporesso Xros 5, Uwell Caliburn G3, Voopoo Vinci Pod). It fits in a pocket, uses replaceable pods or coils, and pairs with high-strength nic salts.

Step 2: Pick the right nicotine strength

Match your smoking level: under 10 cigarettes a day, start with 20mg salt. 10–20 a day, 20mg or 35mg. 20+ a day, 35mg or 50mg. If the first day makes you cough, drop a level. If you're back on cigarettes after two days, step up.

Step 3: Pick a flavour you'll actually enjoy

Tobacco-flavoured e-liquid is available, but most switchers find fruit or menthol easier to stick with — it breaks the sensory link to cigarettes. Try two or three 30ml bottles in different profiles before settling in.

Step 4: The first two weeks

The first 48 hours are the hardest. You will still want a cigarette. Vape whenever the craving hits — do not try to space it out like a cigarette. After week one, most people report the physical cravings dropping sharply. By week two, cigarettes taste worse than they used to.

Common mistakes

Buying a device that is too big and too weak (sub-ohm with 3mg freebase — you'll never feel satisfied). Buying a disposable and calling it a switch — fine short-term, expensive long-term. Trying to quit nicotine at the same time as quitting cigarettes — do one thing at a time.

The money side

20 cigarettes a day at R55 a pack costs about R20 000 a year. A pod kit plus salts costs R5 000–R6 000 a year. You will notice the savings inside the first month.

FAQ

How long does it take to fully switch?

Most people take two to four weeks to stop smoking entirely. Some do it overnight; some take three months. Do not judge yourself by anyone else's timeline.

Can I still smoke occasionally?

You can, but the goal should be zero cigarettes. Every cigarette resets the cravings and stretches out the switch.

What if vaping doesn't work?

Nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum) is available at pharmacies, and Champix is available on prescription. Talk to your GP.
