Vape Battery Safety: A Practical Guide

6 min read

How to use, charge, store and dispose of vape batteries safely — including 18650, 21700 and integrated batteries.

Never carry a loose battery

A loose 18650 in a pocket with keys or coins can short. Use a plastic battery case, every time.

Use the right charger

Chargers with per-slot indication (Nitecore, XTAR) are worth the money. Avoid unbranded chargers with no over-charge protection.

Watch for damaged wraps

The plastic wrap on an 18650 is its only insulation. Nicks or tears mean the battery can short — rewrap or replace immediately.

Match batteries in dual-battery mods

Same brand, same model, same age, charged together. Mismatched batteries in a dual mod are the most common cause of venting.

Do not vape while charging

The device is not designed for it. Charge fully, then vape.

Dispose of dead batteries responsibly

Take dead lithium batteries to a battery recycling bin — Pick n Pay, Woolworths and many electronics stores have them. Do not put them in normal household waste.
